Placemat Activity

My hope as we go through our homeschooling journey is that I will be able to share at least one activity with you all each week. So, as we have begun our journey through preschool we have been focusing on a very broad unit titled All About Me. We have been covering small topics such as what makes us unique and special, body parts, our 5 senses, and important information such as phone number, address, and birthday.

One activity in our Core Knowledge curriculum was to create a placemat with the child's name to help the child identify his or her name. I thought this was a great idea and wanted to take it a step further. We had been discussing how people were unique and special, but we are all still people no matter what we look like or what we like to do.


I decided to give both of my little ones the same color and size piece of paper, but let them decorate it any way they wish. They then talked about their placemat and why they made it the way that they did! From this we then talked about how they are both placemats just like we are all people, but each placemat had differences that made it unique and different just like people are all unique and special.

It was a lot of fun for both of them. They both still cherish and use their special placemats for snack times every day, and talk about what they did to make it unique and special. :-)
