She would cook the apples down with a splash of water, and they would slow cook on the stove all afternoon. She would then smush
them through a sieve, and can them. We would enjoy it all winter long.
When I got older, I would help dice up the apples, and pour the sauce into the jars for her.
As I am typing this I can still smell her house and the warm apple sauce!
So, after going to the apple orchard this year, the first thing I wanted to make was my version of a homemade apple sauce.
In our house, we love our fall foods with a lot of fall spices! Here is my take on grandmas homemade apple sauce. Enjoy, let me know what you think, and please share pics of your applesauce!
- About 16 apples (I used 8 Cortland and 8 Honey Crisp)
- 1/2 cup apple cider
- 1 1/2 T Lemon Juice
- 1T cinnamon
- 1/4 tsp Allspice
- Pinch of clove
- Pinch of nutmeg
- 1/2 c. brown sugar
Directions
- Peel apples and cut them up into small pieces (place in crockpot)
- Add all remaining ingredients into crockpot and combine
- Stir every hour
- Applesauce is done when apple start to fall apart when stirring ( about 3.5 to 4 hours on HIGH)
- Empty into large bowl to cool.
Notes- Makes about 2 quarts of applesauce
- Store in air tight container in fridge
- Freezes well for up to 1 year
